For my event report, I chose to go to an AIGA discussion about typography. It was part of their Speaker Series where they invite up-and-coming designers to come and talk about their experience in the design profession. The event was held on September 22nd at the Denver Art Museum and attendees had to pay a specific fee depending on their relation to the AIGA organization. Since I am not a member of the group but am a current design student, I only had to pay $15 which was only a small fee for everything that was included.
For this specific talk, they invited typographer James Edmondson to share what he has been working on lately. This was probably the most fun event I have been to not only because I was able to learn about typography (which I love), but because James is one of the best speakers I have ever had the honor of listening to. He was so down to earth and super hilarious. It felt like he was talking more to a group of friends than to a group of random strangers listening to his stories. I really enjoyed the fact that he is a young designer who is making his name known through the use of typography. Because he is a younger person, his take on design was still fresh. It makes me a little less nervous to know that the future of design is in the hands of people like him. People who want to explore new ways of expressing ideas. People who aren’t afraid to mess up and learn from their mistakes. People who make something just for fun and then turn it into something amazing. The most important thing I took away from this event was that typography can be fun. Yes, there are times when certain fonts are inappropriate to use but there are other times when using a fun font should be encouraged.
He said that he still has no idea what the hell he is doing but he is loving every minute of the uncertainty because it keeps him on his toes which I feel is something a lot of designers can relate to at least once in their lives. He is passionate about what he does and his drive was extremely evident in his speech. He has created several new typefaces and has worked for big name clients such as Facebook and the Society of Publication Designers. He is also a contributor to a pay-what-you-can font foundry named Lost Type.
The topic of typography relates to what we as young designers have been learning in class in a huge way. We have talked a lot about fonts and choosing the right one for our projects. We have talked about marrying fonts and making sure they go well together. I found our discussion of these things really helpful and insightful when it came to attending this event because it helped me understand what he was talking about a little more. Typography is such an enormous part of the design world and it’s our responsibility as designers to help educate the world about it just like James Edmondson is doing.
Title and Research Question:
“Pokemon Go or No”….How many people downloaded the game on the first day? How many people still play the game? How much money has the game made so far/per day? And various other statistics.
For project 2, I am doing a case study on the app Pokemon GO. I want to compare how well it is doing now to how well it did when it first released. I also want to investigate how well it is doing compared to other popular apps such as tinder or twitter.
I think that I might have some problems finding dependable statistics that I can use because this app came out not too long ago and there might not be that many stats available.
Analysis and Conclusion:
The goal of this project is for me to learn how to do more in depth academic research on topics that aren’t necessarily academic. I want to increase my research skills. I also just want to learn more about why this app is so popular. I think that all of my questions are going to be answered and we will see how well this app is doing.
Data Sets, Variables, Measurements Utilized:
My demographic is the players of this game. I can ask who played it, and what age they are. Since Pokemon was popular in the 90’s, is the game more popular with millennials or with children? Geographics also come into play. Pokemon Go wasn’t released on the same day in every country, so that might throw off the statistics a little bit.
These are the infographs that I am finding my inspiration from. I think I want my inphographic to be a case study because I like the look of the side by side comparison. I also like the color palette in the middle and bottom right graphics and want to use a similar one.
For this project, I recorded all the messages I received through text and messenger. Everything is in chronological order starting from the top left.
With visualization, it is important to remember what you are trying to communicate. I am a more right brained thinker which means I am more creative and less analytical in my thought processes, so naturally I was drawn to the artistic side of data, specifically the data art. I like the idea that data doesn’t always have to look boring like one would naturally assume. It can be expressive and interesting. The chapter says that it is hard to explain exactly what data art is, but “the work is often less about decision making and more about a relationship to the numbers—or rather what they represent—to experience data.” I would like to think that I agree with this. I would much rather experience the data than just look at it and not feel anything at all.
I thought that this chapter was really interesting. Its important to note that data can be portrayed in several different ways, and I didn’t really understand that concept before. I always saw the graphs in my textbooks or online but didn’t really make the correlation of what those graphs actually meant visually. In this chapter it says that “The connection between data and what it represents is key to visualization that means something. It is key to thoughtful data analysis. It is key to a deeper understanding of your data.” As a designer, it is vital for me to extract something of value from those graphics so that when I am asked to produce something visually interesting with the data that I have collected, I will be able to do it efficiently and effectively. It’s all about communication.
